About OIOC
Indigenous Leadership for a Living Culture and a Living Amazon
Rooted in the Kamëntsá Nation of the Sibundoy Valley, OIOC works to protect ancestral knowledge, revitalize language, restore native forests, and strengthen community well-being for future generations.
Our Story
The Organization for Indigenous Outreach and Conservation (OIOC) grew from the vision of Taita Juan Bautista Ágreda and Kamëntsá leaders committed to protecting the sacred relationship between culture, territory, and the living forest.
Rooted in the Sibundoy Valley of Putumayo, in Colombia's Upper Amazon region, our work is guided by ancestral teachings that understand language, land, medicine, community, and spirit as inseparable.
OIOC began as a community movement bringing together elders, educators, families, and young people to revitalize the Kamëntsá language, protect medicinal plants, restore native ecosystems, and sustain ancestral knowledge. Today, we continue this work through Indigenous-led programs and respectful partnerships with organizations, educators, scientists, and supporters worldwide.
Our growth does not change our foundation: the Kamëntsá community defines the priorities, Indigenous knowledge guides the process, and every initiative seeks to create lasting benefits for the territory and future generations.
Our Mission
OIOC is an Indigenous-led organization rooted in the Kamëntsá people of the Sibundoy Valley, in the Colombian Amazon. Our mission is to strengthen Kamëntsá autonomy, identity, and well-being through ancestral language revitalization, intergenerational education, and protecting our territory, native forests, medicinal plants, and living knowledge.
Guided by our elders and community-defined priorities, we build reciprocal partnerships that help Kamëntsá children, youth, families, and knowledge holders sustain their culture and care for the land across generations.
Our Vision
We envision a strong, self-determined Kamëntsá people whose ancestral language flourishes, whose elders’ knowledge guides new generations, and whose families live with dignity in a healthy, culturally vibrant territory.
We seek a future in which Kamëntsá science and knowledge systems are respected, Indigenous leadership shapes decisions affecting the Amazon, and future generations inherit a protected territory, a living culture, and the knowledge needed to care for all life.

Through sustained community leadership and respectful partnerships, OIOC helps transform ancestral knowledge into living action—strengthening Kamëntsá autonomy while protecting the forests, waters, plants, and relationships that sustain life in the Colombian Amazon.
Our Three Strategic Areas
1. Language, Education, and Cultural Continuity
We revitalize the Kamëntsá language and strengthen the transmission of ancestral knowledge through community-led education, weaving, cultural learning, and the active participation of elders, teachers, children, and youth.
2. Territory and Biocultural Restoration
We protect and restore native forests, waters, seeds, medicinal plants, and culturally significant species. Our work recognizes that ecological conservation and cultural survival are inseparable.
3. Indigenous Leadership and Community Well-Being
We strengthen Indigenous-led science, governance, dignified livelihoods, housing, and collective care. We also build ethical partnerships that respect Kamëntsá authority and ensure that research, resources, and decisions benefit the community.
